Public awareness and prevention campaign for rabies, B.E. 2569

Announcement: 6 Aug 2026 73

The situation regarding rabies in Thailand remains concerning, with continued deaths from the disease. In 2565, there were 4 deaths, and in 2566, there were 2 deaths. Furthermore, there have been ongoing outbreaks of rabies in affected areas, with key risk factors contributing to fatalities. These factors include being bitten, scratched, or exposed to rabid animals (dogs or cats) without receiving rabies vaccination. Notably, 50% of the deceased were bitten or scratched by their own pets, and had not received rabies vaccinations, leading to their eventual death from the disease.
To monitor and prevent rabies, we are disseminating information about rabies prevention and raising public awareness in the affected areas, including:
              1. Raise public awareness in the area about the serious danger of rabies, emphasizing that rabies is almost always fatal and can occur throughout the year. While there is currently no cure, rabies can be prevented through vaccination, which is available at local hospitals or health centers.
              2. If bitten or scratched by a dog or cat, immediately clean the wound with clean water, apply an antiseptic, and seek medical attention as soon as possible, along with providing a record of rabies vaccinations for proper treatment.
              3. If you notice that a dog or cat has bitten or scratched itself or someone else, keep the animal confined to observe its condition for at least 10 days. If you suspect that an animal may have rabies, immediately notify the local animal health department and the local public health department.
